Hey guys!
This week I’m back with (surprise, surprise) another swimsuit tutorial! The fun and unique bikini you see above was one I made earlier this year to wear on my trip to South Africa.
What I love about this swimsuit is that it’s a mix between simplistic and unique. I decided to buy a fabric with an interesting pattern to it so that I could design my swimsuit around the pattern. It ended up working really well and added something special to a classic style.
It’s also very easy to make and is a nice go-to swimsuit for the summer. From start to finish, this probably only took around 4 to 5 hour to make. So, even if you’re a beginner, this is a design you’ll definitely be able to handle!
So I hope you give it a try.
Also, as I mentioned, I made this swimsuit to wear to South Africa. Feel free to comment with any questions you might have about wear to go and what to do. I absolutely loved my time there and would be happy to give you some recommendations!
The picture above was taken at Camps Bay Beach, which is definitely a big tourist attraction but surprisingly wasn’t busy at all when I was there in early February. And the views there are incredible. I highly recommend going if you can.
During my trip, I also got to learn about traditional clothing from South Africa. Plus, I even got to try some of it on! If you want to learn more about that traditional clothing or just see the elaborate, gorgeous outfit I got to try on, check it out here.
Anyway, let’s get started with making this simple yet unique triangle bikini!
Materials:
Just so you know, I’ve linked most of the materials below so you know where to find them. I’m not an affiliate for any stores mentioned; these are just the products I generally use.
- Fabric – You’ll need about half a yard or a yard of swimsuit fabric and lining fabric. I usually get a full yard just to make sure I have enough. Here’s where I got this fabric:
- The Fabric Fairy
- The lining fabric is from Joann Fabrics
- For sustainable recycled swimwear fabric, go to fabric.com
- Matching thread – I like to use 100% polyester thread for swimwear, since it’s nice and durable.
- Sewing machine, of course! If you’re in need of a sewing machine, here are my favorite affordable options.
Total Cost of this bikini:
Just to be completely transparent with you, I like to share the cost of each of my designs. Here’s how much this one cost me:
Swimwear fabric: $10.34
Lining fabric: $5.99
100% polyester thread: $1.99
How to make this simple yet unique bikini: (step-by-step instructions)
And that's all there is to it!
Like I said, this is a super easy design that should only take you about half a day to make. I hope you try it out!
If you do, please let me know and tell me how it goes! And be sure to tag me and use the hashtag #travelherstyle. I’d love to see the final look.
Have you seen the last tutorial I made yet for my original color block halter top bikini? If not, head on over to see how to make it for your next sewing project.
Otherwise, I have lots of other tutorials for you to check out here.
Thanks for reading and good luck sewing! See you next time.
