Nice to Meet You, i'm Emily Stübing

While this started as a niche sewing blog, it has slowly evolved into more.

Over 2 years ago, I left my job as a medical interpreter in Iowa and moved back in with my parents, determined to find remote work and travel the world. It took some time and persistence, but finally I landed a job as a translator and saved up for months for my travels.

And I’ve been a digital nomad ever since! Every few months, I go to my home base to create a new swimwear collection inspired by my next destinations. Then, I go back to traveling in my designs and meet with/interview traditional clothing experts along the way.

So, this site began as a place to share those designs, interviews, and swimwear (plus upcycling) tutorials with you.

But, as I learned more about the harmful effects of fast fashion on other people and the planet, I wanted to do my part to make a difference. That’s when I started posting about how to avoid fast fashion and build a sustainable wardrobe.

I’m also starting my own social enterprise selling sustainable and ethical, made-to-order swimwear and am attending Judge Business School to turn that goal into reality.

Now, I want to share with you everything I’ve learned along the way and wish I’d known from the start!

The site will definitely still include sewing tutorials, but I’ll also be sharing designer stories/interviews, sustainable fashion tips, learnings about starting a fashion brand, advice for digital nomads, and some crazy travel stories!

So stay tuned for a bunch of fun new posts being added all the time. 🙂 Hope you enjoy!

Love,
Emily Stübing

Eco-Friendly Design

Not only is making your own clothes a great way to express yourself, but it’s also a way to do something positive for the environment. That’s why I make my own clothes instead of buying from fast fashion brands and upcycle old clothes into something new.

Designer Interviews

While traveling in my designs, I meet with designers and experts of traditional clothing around the world. They share both their stories and the stories that only clothing can tell. I find this an amazing way of connecting with other people and learning more about their cultures.

The idea was inspired by the traditional clothing worn in my region in Germany known as the Schwälmer Tracht (pictured here).

Fun fact: This outfit and the red cap is what Little Red Riding Hood was based off of! In the original German, it’s actually called “Little Red Cap” (Rotkäppchen).

Sustainable & Ethical Fashion

As I began to do more sewing and upcycling, I started learning about the negative effects of fast fashion too.

Sewing, thrifting, and avoiding fast fashion brands are great ways to counteract the issue. And honestly, they’re way more fun and rewarding!

Check out my sustainability page to find out how to build your own sustainable wardrobe. Together, we really can make a difference!

Travel & Lifestyle

Over two years ago, I quit my job in Iowa as a medical interpreter and became a digital nomad (although it wasn’t easy!).

While I absolutely love this lifestyle, there’s tons I wish I’d known from the beginning that would have made life much easier.

And now, I’m in grad school working on my social enterprise. In this part of the blog, you’ll learn all the lessons I have about entrepreneurship and life as a digital nomad through years of trial & error.

Let's be friends?

If you’re interested in learning to sew or simply want tips related to travel, business, life as a digital nomad, or anything else, feel free to reach out!
