5 of the Best Affordable Sewing Machines for Beginners
If you’re new to sewing, chances are you don’t want to invest in a super fancy sewing machine…only to find out you don’t like to sew. 😅 But that doesn’t mean that you can’t still give it a try!
I was lucky enough to get my Mom’s old sewing machine, which I still use to this day. If that isn’t the case for you though, here are 5 affordable sewing machines (listed from most to least expensive) that are low in price, yet high in quality.
All of these machines are beginner-friendly, but also work well enough that they could last you for years to come.
Especially if you think you’ll be sewing for a while, I think it’d be worth investing in one of the first three. If you’re not sure about sewing and just want to try it, the last two are great options! (Though they would probably need to be upgraded later on.)
I’ve linked each title and image to the corresponding page on Amazon in case you’re interested in buying. And I’m not an affiliate of any of these brands – this is just my honest opinion!
So, let’s get started with my recommendations for affordable sewing machines:
1) Janome 2212 | $189
Although this Janome sewing machine is the most expensive of the ones I’ve listed here, I’m biased toward this one since I use a Janome machine myself. (Mine is a Janome My Excel 4023). Which means I know it’s high-quality and dependable!
You can’t go wrong investing a little more in a sewing machine like this one.
Features include:
- 12 built-in stitches
- Easy to use four-step buttonhole
- Lightweight and easy to use
- Dial pattern selection
- Zig-zag stitch width adjustment and stitch length adjustment
2) Singer 4423 | $144.99
Singer is one of the most well-known brands when it comes to sewing machines, and there’s a reason for that. They’ve been making sewing machines since 1851 and know what makes a good machine!
This particular Singer machine is also a bit more of an investment than the ones I’ve listed later on, but it’ll definitely last you for many years.
Features include:
- 23 built-in stitches
Automatic needle threader
- Extra-high sewing speed
- Good for variety of heavy-duty projects — from denim to canvas to fashion designs
3) Brother CS6000i | $142
Brother is another company that is well-known and respected in the sewing industry (it’s the brand the designers on Project Runway use).
This sewing machine is a super high-quality option for a relatively low price. Its’ computerized functions make it easy to use, plus the wide table makes for a convenient surface to sew on. If I were to invest in a new sewing machine today, this might be the one!
Features include:
60 built-in stitches
- Automatic needle threader
- Adjustable stitch speed
- Wide table allowing for extra space for large projects
- Built-in free arm that helps sew sleeves, pant legs, and other cylindrical items
4) Singer 1304 | $89.99
This Singer sewing machine isn’t as fancy as the other, but it still has all the functions you’d need to make just about any project.
If you’re new to sewing and aren’t sure if you want to make a big investment, then this affordable sewing machine is a good option.
Features include:
- 6 built-in stitches
Built-in 4-step buttonhole
Vertical spool pins that make twin needle sewing quick and easy
- Basic, simple and easy-to-use
5) Brother XM2701 | $85
Similar to the Singer 1304, this Brother sewing machine isn’t super fancy, nor does it have all of the same functions as the more expensive options. However, it’ll still allow you to make most anything you want.
Features include:
- 27 built-in stitches
- Automatic needle threader
- 25-year limited warranty
- 1-step, auto-sized buttonholes
- Perfect for beginners learning to sew, & for more advanced sewers looking for easy portability
So, there you have it!
These are my top 5 picks for affordable, yet high-quality sewing machines for beginners.
